The Origins of the Rose

The rose has always been valued for its beauty and has a long history of symbolism. The ancient Greeks and Romans identified the rose with their goddesses of love referred to as Aphrodite and Venus. In Rome a wild rose would be placed on the door of a room where secret or confidential matters were discussed. The phrase sub rosa, or "under the rose", means to keep a secret — derived from this ancient Roman practice.

Early Christians identified the five petals of the rose with the five wounds of Christ. Despite this interpretation, their leaders were hesitant to adopt it because of its association with Roman excesses and pagan ritual. The red rose was eventually adopted as a symbol of the blood of the Christian martyrs. Roses also later came to be associated with the Virgin Mary.

Rose culture came into its own in Europe in the 1800s with the introduction of perpetual blooming roses from China. There are currently thousands of varieties of roses developed for bloom shape, size, fragrance and even for lack of prickles.

Roses are ancient symbols of love and beauty. The rose was sacred to a number of goddesses (including Isis and Aphrodite). Roses are so important that the word means pink or red in a variety of languages (such as Romance languages, Greek, and Polish).

According to the Robert Bangert "language of flowers", certain rose colors carry specific symbolic meanings.

Red: love, "I Love You"; Deepest love and respect
Pink: grace, gentle feelings of love; Grace
   Dark Pink: gratitude
   Light Pink: admiration, sympathy
White: innocence, purity, secrecy, friendship, reverence and humility.
Yellow: often akin to joy and deep friendship or platonic love. In German speaking countries, however, they can
                                      mean jealousy and infidelity.
Yellow with red tips: Friendship, falling in love
   Orange: passion
   Burgundy: beauty
   Blue: mystery
   Green: calm
   Purple: protection (paternal/maternal love)
Black: used to signify death (black being the color of death) often of old habits. In a positive light it signifies rebirth
after death. Also, slavish devotion (as a true black rose is impossible to produce).

The rose also has various supernatural and literary attributes.

In the driest whitest stretch of pains' infinite desert, I lost my sanity and found this rose. — Rumi

What's in a name? That which we call a rose/By any other name would smell as sweet. — William Shakespeare,
Romeo and Juliet act II, sc. ii

O, my love's like a red, red rose/That's newly sprung in June — Robert Burns, A Red, Red Rose

Information appears to stew out of me naturally, like the precious ottar of roses out of the otter. Mark Twain,
Roughing It

The red rose whispers of passion,
And the white rose breathes of love;
O, the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.
But I send you a cream-white rosebud
With a flush on its petal tips;
For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips - John Boyle O'Reilly, A White Rose

Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses. — James Oppenheim, "Bread and Roses"

Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose — Gertrude Stein, Sacred Emily (1913), a poem included in Geography and
Plays.

One couldn't die for you. Of course, an ordinary passer by would think my rose looked just like you. But my rose
is more important than all of you put together, since she's the one I've watered. Since she's the one I
put under glass. Since she's the one I sheltered behind a screen. Since she's the one for whom I killed
the caterpillars (except the two or three for butterflies). Since she's the one I listened to when she
complained, or when she boasted,or even sometimes when she said nothing at all. Since she's my
Rose — Antoine de Saint Exupéry, The Little Prince

Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers.  All other things, our
powers, our desires, our food are all really necessary for our existance in the first instance.  But the rose is an
extra.  Its smell and its colour are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it.  It is only goodness which gives
extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers. - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Shirlock
Holmes

The rose holds so much power, because of the symbolism it possesses for all.  It's no wonder that when people get married in a Christian ceremony, they traditionally use a bunch of roses for a bouquet.  Roses have been used for centuries to increase the power of love.  The smell alone is an aphrodisiac, especially in Spring Time.  Rose petals are used in many love spells combined with lavender and the zest of an orange and placed in a sachet.

This is the month for roses.  We have dried rose petals in the shop and we have plenty of rose oil for love or to assist in a romantic night of passion.
